In October 1869, a German governess, Anna Mues, embarks on her first overseas position in England. After a stormy English Channel crossing, she encounters a ‘sandwich’ at Cannon Street station, experiences confusion over how to say no to sherry, and encounters ‘toast’ at breakfast. This is part of her memoir, which I am currently translating.
