Prices are for guidance only. A detailed quote will be provided upon receipt of your document(s). 

Translation

Translation from German into English will be charged per project, with a minimum fee of NZD 40. The overall fee will take into account factors such as word count, complexity and degree of proofreading requested; for example, I collaborate with other experienced translators who can read through my translations to provide a final check on quality and this additional service is reflected in the cost. A short, simple text for personal use will be quicker to translate than a longer text with complex terminology that is going to be published but you can be sure that I will always discuss with you in advance the type of translation and quality control that you require.

Surcharges may apply if documents are supplied in non-editable formats (handwritten, images, etc.) or if deadlines require working on weekends or public holidays.

A surcharge may also apply for translations with a 24 hour turnaround; however, the time difference between New Zealand and Europe allows me to work during my regular office hours on projects submitted at the end of the working day in Europe.

Transcription

Transcription of German handwritten text into electronic format: NZD 45 per hour.

Editing and proofreading

Editing: NZD 40 per hour.

Proofreading: NZD 35 per hour.

Medical translation

Quality is your main concern and I understand why: there is no room for error or misunderstanding in medical texts. When it comes to the translation of those texts, I bring a relentless concentration on accuracy and a commitment to ensuring that your content reads well. You know that the flow of the text is important as is finding the right tone to appeal to your audience, whether academic or the general public. At the same time, any specialist terms must be accurately translated. With my academic background, it’s no surprise that I have a passion for translating texts relating to European history and culture. Some examples of the texts I’ve translated are:

About me.

I’m Hannah Burdekin. I’ve been a full-time translator since 2016 but my interest in language and words stretches back to my childhood. Having tried to teach myself German from a Berlitz phrasebook when I was eight (unsuccessfully!), I started studying French and German at secondary school and went on to complete a BA in the same languages, and a Masters and a Doctorate in German literature at the University of Oxford. I then spent ten years working for the UK government Department of Health, where I produced ministerial briefings and speeches and contributed to governmental consultations and reports.

But my love for German in particular never went away and after moving to New Zealand in 2011 I spent some years working as a Tutor in German at the University of Auckland. I now combine my background in languages with the skills in research and writing gained from my time in academia and the Civil Service.
