Some styles of German handwriting, especially those pre-dating the mid-20th century, can be extremely difficult for the untrained eye to read. Unfortunately, this can mean that fascinating information, including personal letters, diary entries and genealogical records such as birth, marriage and death register entries, gets lost and forgotten.
I have experience of working with handwritten documents gained through my academic research. In 2024, I completed a fascinating project, deciphering and translating a notebook of poems written in the early 1860s, enabling my client to read his great-great-great-grandmother’s words for the first time.
